Education is for everyone, even for children with disabilities. There is a United States federal law that require how the states and public agencies should provide early intervention or special education and other related services to children with disabilities, the Individuals with Disabilities Education (IDEA). They focus on the educational needs of children with disabilities from birth to age 18 or 21 incases that involve 14 specified categories disability. The State, community and the family life has a common vision for children with special need.
Even thou coordination problems are not always a sign of learning disability, there are evidence that a high percentage of children with learning disabilities have coordination problems. Difficulty learning new skills, relying on memorization, trouble learning about time, difficulty remembering facts, confusing basic words (dog, cat, run), poor coordination, ‘accident prone’, unaware of physical surroundings, having a hard time learning the connection between letters and sounds (Phonetics), spelling and reading errors such as substitutions (house/home), letter reversals (b/d), inversions (m/w) and transpositions (felt/left), problems with planning, impulsive behaviour, transposes number sequences and confuses arithmetic signs are some of the characteristic that if the shows you should have him or her tested. Over 11% of all public school students receive special education services. The population of students with disabilities is incredibly different. There are federal special education programs for children with disabilities ranging in the age from birth through 21. They have different needs and disabilities, from mild to severe. In the population of the students with disabilities half of it is consists of children with specific learning disabilities, the one-fifth is consists of children with speech or language impairments. Mental retardation, emotional disturbance, multiple disabilities, hearing impairments, orthopedic impairments, other health impairments, visual impairments, autism, deaf-blindness, traumatic brain injury, and developmental delay are the other disabilities that are recognized in federal law. There are some people think that a special education is a self-contained system or a place within a school. Special education is a set of services and activities specially designed to help children with disabilities succeed.
Teacher with a bachelor’s degree in education can join a course on Special Education. There are college institutions that offer bachelors and masters degree in special education. There are various techniques that are used by special education teachers to promote learning. Depending on the disability, teaching methods can include individualized instruction, problem-solving assignments, and small group work. If students need a special accommodations to be able to take a test, the special education teachers make sure that appropriate one is provided like having the questions read orally or lengthening the time allowed to take the test. For each special student an Individualized Education Program is develop by a teacher to set personalized goals for each student and is tailored to the student’s individual needs and ability. The teachers work closely with parents to inform them of their child’s progress and suggest techniques to promote learning at home. They are involved in the students’ behavioural, social, and academic development, helping the students develop emotionally, feel comfortable in social situations, and be aware of socially acceptable behaviour. They also communicate and work together with parents, social workers, school psychologists, speech therapists, occupational and physical therapists, school administrators, and other teachers.
